![]() Perhaps the highlight of the expansion is the inclusion of a new elemental subclass, something that hasn’t happened before. Just as a fun AAA shooter campaign, there is a good 10-15 hours experience to be had in Beyond Light. However, there is a lot of story content in there, that lasts much further than just the main campaign. It’s serviceable but beginners may struggle as they figure out the complicated structure of the game. For new players, Bungie has yet again redesigned the entry experience for the game. We are in a war between the Light and the Dark.įor those with less of an investment in the franchise, Beyond Light still has plenty to offer. The story, possibly for the first time, has an immediacy that has been missing. Players can use it and, as Bungie has detailed the next two expansions coming, there is a renewed sense of vision in the game. In terms of ongoing story, Beyond Light feels like the first step forwards in a long time. The Darkness, the Hive, the Cabal… almost everything in the game hinted at major events in the near future but the in-game story continually spun its wheels, never delivering on the oft-made promises. Ever since the franchise began there has always been a sense of a coming fight that never arrived. Without a broader understanding of the supportive texts, major events can feel disconnected from the act of playing the game. It’s an interesting dichotomy and appears to be the central thesis of the plot’s future direction. However, embracing the Darkness and what that means for the Guardians as Children of the Light is at the centre of the conflict. It’s a fairly fun romp, and Eramis proves to be one of the more interesting big bads in Destiny history. This grants you access to a new ice-based subclass called Stasis. From there, players are encouraged to fight fire with fire and accept the Darkness’s blessing. She reappears from another timeline to help the Guardians get a handle on this new threat. That’s potentially ruinous for Earth and the Last City the Guardians protect.Įnter the Exo Stranger (the one who said she didn’t have time to tell you why she didn’t have time to explain the plot to you) who has been missing in action since the end of the first game’s campaign. What’s more, it appears the Darkness has blessed her army with new powers. From there, Eramis, a formidable Kell, has started to unify the houses of the Fallen, presenting herself as a significant foil. Receiving a call from old fan favourite Variks, you’re called to Europa to help with a new Fallen threat. The Darkness is finally here, and it appears to be fascinated with humanity. The expansion opens where the last season of content left off. Although, the longer answer is a little more nuanced. This is one of the best and most important expansions the series has ever seen.
